Where official prices come from
Agmarknet, run by the government, publishes daily arrival and price data (minimum, maximum, and modal price) for hundreds of commodities across mandis in India. The modal price is the most common trade price and is the most useful single number for a quick check.
How to check a price on Agmarknet
- Open the official portal agmarknet.gov.in.
- Choose your commodity (e.g., onion, tomato, wheat).
- Select your state, district, and mandi, and the date.
- Read the minimum, maximum, and modal price per quintal for that mandi.
What moves mandi prices
- Arrivals — heavy arrivals usually push prices down; low arrivals push them up.
- Season and weather — harvest gluts and rain damage swing prices sharply.
- Demand and festivals, transport and storage costs, and quality/grade of produce.
Selling smarter
Compare a few nearby mandis before you transport your produce, and look at the last few days' trend rather than a single day. A rising modal price with steady arrivals is a better signal than a one-day spike.
