How to write your RTI
- Address it to the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the concerned department.
- Write clear, specific questions — ask for exact information or documents.
- Add your name, address, and contact.
- Keep it short and factual; you don't have to give a reason for asking.
Filing online (central departments)
- Go to the official RTI portal rtionline.gov.in.
- Select the ministry/department and fill the request form.
- Pay the small application fee online.
- Save your registration number to track the reply.
Filing offline
Write the RTI on plain paper, attach the fee (as a postal order/DD/cash as accepted), and submit or post it to the department's PIO. Keep a copy and the postal receipt. You should normally get a reply within 30 days.
